Forward Deployed Engineering
Forward Deployed Engineering: Your Tech Division, Embedded in Your Business
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer’s business, learns the real workflow firsthand, and ships production software that solves it, instead of passing requirements back and forth. Web Your Vyavsay offers forward deployed engineering as a service: our engineers act as your company’s tech division, so your team can stay focused on running the business.
What a forward deployed engineer does
- Sits with the people who do the work and learns how it actually runs, including the spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups and workarounds.
- Decides with you which problem to solve first, based on time and money lost.
- Writes, tests and ships the software to production, not a prototype.
- Stays on after launch to fix, run and improve the system as the business changes.
Forward deployed engineering vs. an agency, a fractional CTO, or an in-house hire
| Forward deployed team | Traditional agency | Fractional CTO | In-house hire | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who learns your workflow | Engineers, firsthand, alongside your team | A project manager, through a requirements document | The CTO, at strategy level | Your new hire, over their first months |
| Writes and ships the software | Yes | Yes, to the agreed scope | Usually not; advises and hires | Yes |
| Owns technical decisions | Yes, with you | Within the project scope | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Companies without a tech team that need one now | One well-defined project | Startups that need technical leadership | Companies ready to build a permanent team |
Forward deployed engineer vs software engineer
| Forward deployed engineer | Software engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Works from | Inside the customer’s operations | Inside the product team |
| Input | Problems observed firsthand | Tickets and specifications |
| Scope | Whatever solves the customer’s problem, end to end | Assigned features or components |
| Measured by | The customer’s outcome | Shipped features and code quality |

How an engagement works
- 1
Embed and map the work
We learn how your team operates today: the tools, files, handoffs and where time and money leak.
- 2
Pick the first system to fix
We agree on the one process where software will pay back fastest, and define what “done” looks like.
- 3
Ship in short cycles
Design and build happen in short sprints with working builds your team uses and reviews as we go.
- 4
Run it and move to the next problem
After launch we monitor, fix and improve the system, then take on the next process on your list.
Who it is for
- Businesses that run operations on Excel, Google Sheets and WhatsApp and have outgrown them.
- Companies without a CTO or in-house engineers that still need software built and maintained.
- Founders with a product to build and no engineering team yet.
- Teams whose previous developer or vendor left and who need someone to take over the system.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a forward deployed engineer?
- A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who embeds with a customer, works next to the people doing the job, and builds and ships the software they need. The role was popularised by Palantir and is now used by AI companies such as OpenAI. As a service, it means an outside engineering team that works like your own tech department rather than a vendor waiting for a specification.
- Is forward deployed engineering the same as outsourcing?
- No. Classic outsourcing builds to a written scope and hands the result back. A forward deployed team learns your operations directly, decides with you what to build first, ships it, and stays responsible for running and improving it.
- How is it different from hiring a fractional CTO?
- A fractional CTO gives part-time technical leadership: strategy, architecture and hiring advice. A forward deployed team gives you that judgement and also writes, ships and maintains the software, so you do not need to hire engineers to act on the advice.
- What kind of software do you build as an embedded team?
- Custom CRMs and ERPs, internal portals, payment and operations dashboards, customer-facing web and mobile apps, and workflow and AI automation, including WhatsApp Cloud API and Meta Lead Ads integrations.
- How does a forward deployed engineering team compare with hiring an in-house tech department?
- An in-house department gives you the most control once you can hire and keep a full team, but hiring takes months and a small team covers few skills. A forward deployed team gives you a working tech function now, with leadership, building and support covered, and you can still hire in-house later.
- Do you work with companies outside India?
- Yes. We are based in Ahmedabad, India, and work with businesses worldwide.
